With a rhythmically-driven approach and deeply contemplative outlook on music and life itself, Malaysia’s Zalila Lee is making her mark as a singer-songwriter and session musician. Although her sound ebbs and flows in mood and direction, she predominantly collates elements of Blues and Alternative, with a lyrical style that echoes strong influences from Folk. Emotionally, her music leans towards the darker side of the spectrum, positing questions to the listener, while circling around themes of power structures, hierarchies, and spirituality.
Having first picked up the guitar at the age of 13, Zalila started receiving her first paid gigs a few years later during her college days. It was around this time that she ventured into writing her own compositions, with this process unlocking a world of emotional release.
Aside from her solo work, Zalila now works full time in music. She sessions percussion and drums for local artists, has worked as a lyricist, music producer, vocal recording supervisor, stage manager, and together with music collaborator Melina William (Tempered Mental), the pair produce local indie artists under the name Angie Farr.
Zalila Lee's previous body of released work came in the form of her 'Shadows' EP in 2014, and has continuously created music to exclusively play for fans at live performances. Although established in the industry, Zalila's drive to continuously explore new musical avenues will ensure her continued success as a musician.
